Navagraha — The Nine Planets of Vedic Astrology

नवग्रह — वैदिक ज्योतिषको नौ ग्रह

Suraksha·10 min min read·April 2026

In Vedic astrology, the cosmos is understood through nine planetary bodies (Navagraha: नवग्रह, meaning 'nine planets'). Unlike Western astrology, which distinguishes planets from luminaries, Jyotish treats the Sun and Moon as grahas (planets) equal in status to the other seven. The nine are: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node). Each graha has a distinct function in the cosmos and in your natal chart. Each rules specific body parts, days, metals, gems, and life domains. Understanding the navagrahas is understanding the fundamental architecture of existence in Vedic philosophy.

Remedies (Upayas)

  • 1Study the Navagrahas Systematically — Each planet deserves deep understanding. Spend a week on each planet's qualities, ruling days, gems, and mantras. Create a personal reference guide.
  • 2Observe Planetary Days and Fasts — Dedicate each planet's day to its worship and fasting. Monday (Moon) fast on milk and fruits. Saturday (Saturn) simple vegetarian. This attunes your body to planetary rhythms.
  • 3Wear Appropriate Gems — Consult a Jyotishi about which planet needs strengthening in your chart. Wearing the corresponding gem (always with correct metal and finger) amplifies planetary power.
  • 4Chant Graha Mantras — Dedicate 108 repetitions of each planet's mantra on its ruling day. This creates resonance between your consciousness and planetary energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear all nine gemstones?+
Not without guidance. Each gem corresponds to a planet, and wearing the wrong gem or an unripe gem can create more problems. Consult a qualified Jyotishi to determine which planets need strengthening in your chart before wearing any gem.
Which planets are benefic and which are malefic?+
Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics (good). Saturn, Mars, and the nodes (Rahu, Ketu) are natural malefics (challenging). Sun and Moon are neutral but can be benefic or malefic depending on placement. Mercury is benefic when strong, malefic when weak. Context always matters.
What is the difference between a planet's exaltation and debilitation?+
Exaltation (Uchcha) is a sign where a planet is strongest and expresses its best qualities. Debilitation (Neecha) is a sign where a planet is weakest and struggles to express itself. However, even a debilitated planet can become strong through remedies.
How do I know which planets are weak in my chart?+
A Jyotishi can analyze your chart and identify weak planets through several indicators: debilitation sign, unfavorable aspects, weak nakshatra ruler, or unfavorable house placement. Getting a professional reading is the most accurate way.
Are there any planets that never cause harm?+
Jupiter is considered the most benevolent planet and rarely causes severe harm even when afflicted. Venus also generally brings positive outcomes. However, no planet is purely harmful or helpful—context, placement, and aspects determine the outcome.
